Freehand Pattern Creation - Part 1: Vector GraphicsUpdated a month ago
Creating Custom Freehand Patterns
The Oasis Mini can draw both Algorithmic and Freehand custom patterns. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you step-by-step through creating and uploading a Freehand pattern using vector graphic software.
Freehand vs. Algorithmic Patterns
Algorithmic patterns are generated by computer, and Freehand Patterns are drawn by hand in a single continuous path.We have a tutorial for creating Algorithmic patterns using a free app called Sandify here.
Algorithmic patterns from Sandify are saved in a Theta Ro or THR file format, and Freehand patterns are saved in SVG file format, which can be created with any vector graphic software tool. This is part 1 of 6 total.
Part 1: Understanding Vector Graphics
Unlike raster images (which are made of pixels), vector graphics use mathematical formulas to create shapes. This means they can be scaled up or down without losing quality, and their file format is called Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).
To design a pattern compatible with the Oasis Mini, you'll need to create a continuous vector path saved in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. It’s like creating an image that you could draw on an Etch-A-Sketch, without the necessary dexterity for operating the double knob controls.
There are several vector drawing applications available such as:
Inkscape (Free, open-source) – Download here
Adobe Illustrator (Paid subscription through Adobe)
Affinity Designer (One-time purchase license)
You can use whichever one you’re comfortable with, but for our freehand pattern tutorial we’ll use Inkscape because it is free and open-source.
